“Stone-Cold Sober” at college

January 11th, 2008 by John B.

For some time I’ve been aware of “Top 10 Party Colleges” lists, but today the Princeton Review threw me for a loop.  They also publish their own Top 20 party schools list, but in the spirit of being fair and balanced, they also publish their own list of “Stone-Cold Sober” schools.  Of course the absence (or relative absence) of hedonism on campus doesn’t guarantee a rich learning environment.  On the other hand, the old “we work hard; we play hard” philosophy of how to succeed in college for years has been the unreflective default assumption of hundreds of thousands of students who seek party environments, and each year most of those students discover the hard way how vacuous that philosophy is–intellectually, socially, spiritually, and otherwise.

To see more lists, go to http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/rankings/rankings.asp.  It’s a free registration with Princeton Review.

How does one gauge the sobriety of a school? Is there some sort of massive campus breathalizer that they use? Ah, statistics.

It’s too bad the Bible Colleges didn’t make the list. Maybe next year.

Point taken, Jon. If Princeton Review had sought to survey Bible college students, no doubt their “this party has left the building” category would look even more interesting. Thanks for the comment.
